8.75 x 6.75" albumen on 9 x 11.5" mount with printed A. Gardner, Photographer/Washington credit along lower margins, captioned in period ink, Officers of the 1st Brigade/Horse Artillery/Army of the Potomac. The noteworthy Captain James M. Robertson, 2nd U.S. Artillery is seated at center amongst a crowd of fellow officers casually posed in front of a comfortable tented encampment with black servant drawing spirits from a keg. The detailed image was photographed by Alexander Gardner near Culpepper, Virginia, in August 1863. An old army regular who entered service in 1838, Robertson was breveted for "gallantry" at Gaines' Mill, Gettysburg, and Cold Harbor and ended the war as a brigadier general. Robertson retired from the army in 1879 and died in Plattsburg, New York in 1891. Curiously, the photograph is marked in five places with the blindstamp of Brush Studio & Art Shop, Plattsburg, N.Y., although there is nothing that would indicate previous ownership by General Robertson. Condition: Moderate toning noted with significant wear and chipping to lower edge of mount with two corners missing, still G.
