Folio (497 x 369 mm). Contemporary crimson morocco over pebbled cloth boards, covers with blind-decorated panels, spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Faintest foxing mainly to text, but visible on some plates, generally internally clean, hinges cracked, covers with several stray stains, corners rubbed, spine with some chips and tears, joints weak. First edition. Garnier was part of a French expedition under Captain Ernest Doudard de Lagrée to explore the valley of the Mekong River. Garnier took command of the mission when the Captain died partway through and safely led the expedition to the Chinese coast via the Yangtze River. The expedition travelled almost 5400 miles, mapping over 3600 miles of terrain previously unknown to Europeans. After his celebrated return to France, Garnier participated in the Franco-Prussian war, finished his account of the expedition, and returned to Indo-China to establish a colony in Tonkin. He took Hanoi on November 20th, 1873, but was killed a month later during a fight with the rebel group, the Black Flags. See illustration.
