Gaston Lachaise French/American, 1882-1935 Woman (Standing Nude) (LF 335) French/American, 1882-1935 Woman (Standing Nude) (LF 335) Signed G. Lachaise, stamped Roman Bronze Works/N-Y- on the base and inscribed 40 on the underside; modeled circa 1910 and cast by circa 1917 Bronze with black patina 8 1/2 x 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches Provenance: Isabel Lachaise, New York Weyhe Gallery, New York, acquired from the above in 1936 Mr. and Mrs. Edwin J. Weiss, Buffalo, New York, purchased from the above on September 2, 1936 Thence by descent to the present owner Exhibited: Buffalo, NY, Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, Albright Art Gallery, Master Bronzes, 1937, no. 169 Literature: Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, Albright Art Gallery, Master Bronzes: Selected from Museums and Collections in America, February, 1937, exh. cat., Buffalo, NY, 1937(?), n.p., pl. 169 D. B. Goodall, Gaston Lachaise Sculptor, Ph.D. dissertation, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., 1969, vol. 1, 287-90, 300n. 17; vol. 2, p. 426 Woman (Standing Nude) is one of a number of small bronze figures produced by Gaston Lachaise between 1906, when he immigrated to the United States, and 1917, when he was completing work for his first solo exhibition, held at the Bourgeois Galleries, New York City, in early 1918. In its conception and handling, the present work closely compares with a number of these, including a statuette of a lightly draped young woman with long legs, large breasts, and flowing hair dating from about 1910 (illustrated V. Budny, "Gaston Lachaise's American Venus: The Genesis and Evolution of Elevation," The American Art Journal, vols. 34-35, 2003-2004, p. 94, fig. 26). Like that statuette, it was inspired by Lachaise's perennial muse, Isabel Dutaud Nagle (1872-1957), whom he married in June of 1917, and both examples typify his figural style several years before he began creating his monumental Elevation (Standing Woman) (LF 55), a universally recognized icon of modern art in America, which was similarly inspired by Isabel and was carried out in 1912-15. The present cast of Woman (Standing Nude), which has remained away from the public eye for nearly eighty years, is unique. The plaster model is lost. The Lachaise Foundation, Boston, which oversees the artist's estate, has given the inventory number LF 335 to Woman (Standing Nude). We are grateful to Virginia Budny for preparing the entry for this work. C
Some scattered wear. Oxidation to the crevices on the back of the sculture.
