GAUGUIN, Eugène-Henri-Paul. Illustrated autograph letter signed ("Paul Gauguin") TO ÉMILE BERNARD (1868-1941) ("Mon cher Bernard"), n.p., n.d. [Tahiti?, 1890s?]. 3 pages, large 8vo, on thin (Tahitian-made?) paper, evenly browned, letter on page 1, drawings on page 3 and 4 of a four-page gathering . In French. A LETTER WITH THREE INK SKETCHES, NOTING THE DEATH OF "VINCENT" To his friend and fellow painter Bernard, with whom he had developed Synthetism at Pont-Aven in the 1880s, Gauguin writes cheerfully: "I just came back from Pont-Aven where I spent a few days with Filiger. Upon my return I found a letter from him. I received news of the death of Vincent [Van Gogh?]. There is nothing to say. On the back [of the sheet], my statue [referring to one of the drawings]. My kindest regards to Madeleine your little sister. Cordially yours" On page 4 Gauguin has added a quick ink sketch drawing of a crouching cat with an unidentified form below and a partial inscription: "Voici le K-." On page 3 is a more complex sketch, showing a standing figure, perhaps wearing a hood or shawl, with a large cartouche at top incorporating the initials "P.G," and a central legend "NOA NOA G G O." At the right edge, Gauguin has labelled it: "Here is a design of my statue, which I have unfortunately broken". The reference in the label is to the Tahitian phrase "Noa Noa," adopted by Gauguin as the title of his Tahitian journal, published several years later, which remains one of the key documents in Gauguin's career.
