The association in question is the Société anonyme cooperative des artistes peintres, sculpteurs, graveurs , the founding body of the Impressionist movement: Gauguin's membership of this body, sealed with the inclusion of his sculpture of his son, Emile, at the Fourth Impressionist Exhibition in May 1879, is a key moment in his development, coming when he was still only a part-time artist (he was not to abandon his career as a stockbroker until 1882).
