Gauguin') to [Camille] Pissarro, n.p., 3 April 1879, accepting with pleasure the invitation of Pissarro and Degas to join their association, and agreeing to abide by its rules and to pay the subscriptions; he looks forward to seeing Pissarro at Madame Latouche's, where they will discuss the matter, one page, 8vo , (210 x 136mm), on a bifolium (remnants of tape to verso of blank).

'Mon cher Mr Pissaro, J'accepte avec plaisir l'invitation que vous et Mr Degas avaient bien voulu me faire, et naturellement dans ce cas je me dois à toutes les règles qui régissent votre societé. En me décidant je tiens à votre disposition des frais de cotisation; je vous verrai il est probable chez Made Latouche et nous nous entendrons à ce sujet Tout à vous avec mes remerciments P. Gauguin'. The association in question is the Société anonyme cooperative des artistes peintres, sculpteurs, graveurs , the founding body of the Impressionist movement: Gauguin's membership of this body, sealed with the inclusion of his sculpture of his son, Emile, at the Fourth Impressionist Exhibition in May 1879, is a key moment in his development, coming when he was still only a part-time artist (he was not to abandon his career as a stockbroker until 1882).
