Beschreibung:

GAUSS, Carl Friedrich (1777-1855). Disquisitiones arithmeticae . Leipzig: Gerhard Fleischer, 1801. 8 o (190 x 120 mm). Leaves K3, Ff7 are cancels; B7, G4 and Tt6 are uncancelled and with their cancellans also included after Uu1 (the cancellan for Tt6 present as Uu4). (Inscription or library marks removed on title-page.) Contemporary German half calf, marbled boards (joints split); quarter morocco folding case. Provenance : R. Zoanorus (signature on front pastedown); Theodor Schroeder (signature on front free endpaper). FIRST EDITION OF THE FUNDAMENTAL BOOK ON THE MODERN THEORY OF NUMBERS. Gauss's work contains his proof of the law of quadratic reciprocity (which had eluded both Euler and Legendre), "followed by the notation of binary quadratic forms, the introduction of the theory of congruences, expansion of quadratic forms, and a new theory of the division of the circle" (Dibner). "The typesetters of this work were unable to understand Gauss's new and difficult mathematics, creating numerous elaborate mistakes which Gauss was unable to correct in proof. After the book was printed Gauss insisted that, in addition to an unusually lengthy four-page errata, the worst mistakes be corrected by cancel leaves to be inserted in the copies before sale" (Norman). Dibner Heralds of Science 114; Grolier/Horblit 38; PMM 257; Norman 878.
