Gttingen: Dieterich, 1828. 4 o (258 x 212 mm). (Extreme inner margin of A1.4 strengthened, a few other small marginal repairs.) 19th-century marbled boards, original plain wrappers bound in. FIRST EDITION, offprint issue of Gauss's definitive treatment of the differential geometry of surfaces lying in three-dimensional space. "It also advanced the radical concept that a surface is a space in itself--a concept implicating the existence of a non-Euclidean geometry" (Norman). Gauss believed this work anticipated Bolyai's work, and it is considered a precursor of non-Euclidean geometry. RARE. Kline, pp. 882-889; Norman 880.
