Hand-coloured engraved frontispiece in duplicate, 15 engraved plates by Geoffroy after Gavarni, each in 2 states, one hand-coloured and with filigree border, the other uncoloured and on chine appliqué , with tissue guards. (Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary vellum gilt, uncut. Provenance : Coloured art nouveau bookplate with motto "Librorum flos illibatus" in both works; earlier bookplate of Albert Pascal in the second work only. FIRST EDIITON. Paris: 1838-42.] 4° (335 x 260mm). 47 hand-coloured lithographed plates only after Gavarni (of 49), heightened with gum arabic, numbered 1-47. (Without title, plate 19 with repair at outer margin, plate 36 with lower outer corner torn away, occasional light spotting or soiling of margins.) Later marbled boards backed in brown morocco and with morocco lettering-piece on upper cover, spine gilt (but rubbed). Beraldi VII, p. 51; Ray French 152.
