Wooton in volume I, 16 plates by G. Scotin after H. Gravelot in volume II (occasional light spotting), polished tan calf by F. Bedford, triple gilt fillets on sides, raised bands, green morocco lettering-pieces, compartments lavishly decorated in gilt with central motif of a cup with two drinking birds, gilt board-edges and turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance: Frank Linsly James (bookplate). Second edition of voulme I, first edition of volume II. Foxon p. 295. The Cabinet of Genius containing frontispieces and characters adapted to the most popular poems , London: C. Taylor, 1787 [plates dated 1786-1789]. Volume I only (of 2), small 4° (200 x 160mm.), engraved title and 61 plates only, printed in sepia, by C. Taylor and J. Ogborne after T. Shelley, 5 additional engraved plates bound in at end (lacking leaf of contents, a few light spots), brown panelled morocco gilt by Riviere, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges. According to ESTC on the verso of the contents leaf it states: "Gentlemen may bind any numbers together to make a volume, and in any order they please, which indicates the variety and strangeness possible in any copy".
