George Armfield British, circa 1808-1893 Sir Walter Scott's Dogs, 1854 British, circa 1808-1893 Sir Walter Scott's Dogs, 1854 Signed G. Armfield and dated 1854 (ll) Oil on canvas 28 1/8 x 36 inches (71.5 x 91.5 cm) Provenance: Loomis Collection, acquired circa 1872 in Dublin Burdett Loomis, Jr., Hartford, Connecticut, by descent from his mother; thence by descent in the family Private collection, Essex, Connecticut Exhibited: New London, Connecticut, Lyman Allyn Art Museum, no. 380 It is purported that George Armfield painted this in Abbottsford, home of Sir Walter Scott and that Scott's favorite dog, Maida, is pictured at center. Maida was a stag-hound of the old Highland breed. Scott wrote of Maida in a letter to Sir Adam Ferguson and described him as "one of the hansomest dogs that could be found; it was a present to me from the chief of Glengary, and was highly valued, both on account of his beauty, his fidelity, and the great rarity of the breed."
Glue lined. Frame rubbing. Scattered craquelure. Visible stretcher marks along the left and right. Scattered inpainting within some lines of paint separation: small area at top center; 6 x 2 inch area at top right; 5 x 6 inch area at far left center - above the dogs. There is a 9 x 1 1/2 inch area of inpainting in the lower left corner, around the signature. Portions of the signature have been obscured by the restoration. 1 inch thin line of inpainting at far left center. 1 1/2 inch t-shaped area of inpainting (possibly over an old tear) and a 2 1/2 inch area of inpainting just below this (also over an old tear.) Most of the inpainting is in the background and not in the dogs, however there are some small area of scattered inpainting within the dogs.
