GEORGE FRENCH ANGAS (1822-1886)
GEORGE FRENCH ANGAS (1822-1886) South Australia Illustrated. London: Thomas M'Lean, 1847. 2° (530 x 378mm). Hand-colored tinted lithographic title, letterpress title, lithographic dedication to Queen Adelaide, list of subscribers, Preface and General Remarks dated 1 July 1846, and 59 of 60 hand-colored tinted lithographic plates, heightened with gum Arabic, all mounted on guards (lacking the plate of Adelaide, minor dust soiling to margins, occasional closed tears to margins, occasional light water staining mainly marginal.) Contemporary half morocco, spine gilt (extremities rubbed, headcap worn). Provenance : Alfred James Carver (1826-1909, Master of Dulwich College; presentation inscription from Walter Hawkins dated June, 1847). FIRST EDITION. George Angas was the son of George Fife Angas, one of the founders of South Australia. After studying drawing and lithography in London he travelled to Malta and Sicily (1841-42), before embarking for Australia in 1843 moving on to New Zealand in the following year. ' South Australia Illustrated is without question Angas' greatest and most accomplished work. His views of towns and scenery, of the Aborigines and of the flora and fauna offer an outstanding -- if romantic -- interpretation of the Australian landscape. It is a rare book... and one that has always been held in high esteem. It must be considered one of the fundamental works in any collection of Australian plate books and no collection can be considered complete without it' (Wantrup). Abbey Travel , 577; Colas 133; Ferguson IV, 4458; Tooley 62; Wantrup 237.
