George Inness American, 1825-1894 Late Sunset, circa 1884 American, 1825-1894 Late Sunset, circa 1884 Signed G. Inness (lr) and titled on an old label on the reverse Oil on paper laid to heavy cardboard 9 1/4 x 12 inches Provenance: Elizabeth Hart Inness, widow of the artist Fifth Avenue Art Galleries, New York [Mrs. George Inness executor's sale], Feb. 11-13, 1904, no. 64 P. H. McMahon, Brooklyn, NY, to 1916 The American Art Association, NY, Nearly Three Hundred Valuable Paintings by Ancient and Modern Masters, May 9-11, 1916, no. 95, listed as on panel, described William Torrey Baird, South Orange, NJ, acquired at the above sale, and by descent in the family through three generations Literature: LeRoy Ireland, The Works of George Inness (1965), listed, Part Two, p. 427 Michael Quick has observed: "A description of the support is a bit tricky. Technically, it is painted on paper, mounted on a thick cardboard support.... But Inness did not paint on paper. The paper, in this case, was the surface of a fairly thin, commercially available artist's board. Whoever organized the Inness paintings that were in the artist's estate routinely removed the surface from thin artist's boards, and then mounted them on the kind of thick cardboard that supports this painting. This was done by the artist's estate." "I would classify Sunset as an only partially completed painting, although the free painting in the less finished parts appeals greatly to our modern taste. The most important part, the sky, certainly is fully finished, and the same could be said about the distance. The foreground is merely blocked out, awaiting further work and a greater resolution. I date Sunset to the period around 1884, when Inness painted a number of landscapes dominated by the strong color of a glowing sunset." This painting was examined by Michael Quick, who plans to include it in the supplement to his book George Inness A Catalogue Raisonne (2007). We thank Dr. Quick for his kind assistance in authenticating and documenting this work. C Property of a New Jersey Collector
1 1/2 inch repaired vertical tear at upper edge approximately 1 inch from left corner; two areas of inpaint along the left edge, each approximately 1 1/2-2 inches x 1/2 inch; a few tiny scattered areas of inpaint. Selectively cleaned varnish; the area around the signature is untouched.
