'I saw Heinemann and he is anxious to publish " Hail and Farewell " but he says he must see the manuscript - well, of course he must. If he were to find anything libellous in it he would love to stop the printing.' Moore explains the origins of the titles for his autobiographical trilogy. 'Heinemann asked for titles for the different volumes - Hail will do for the first and Farewell for the third but we could not think of a title for the second vol till Atkinson, who is now Heinemann's reader suggested Salve which means "Here I am" or "Welcome" - the Romans used to put it on the door step, 'Ave' 'Salve' 'Vale' with ' Hail and Farewell ' for general title.'
