Corrections on pp. 1, 8, 15, 20, 21, 106, 146, 178, 196, 219, 220 and 260. Unbound, morroco-backed green cloth case. Provenance : Edward Dujardin (inscription on first page in French: 'Since you are in the volume, my dear Dujardin, keep the proofs. Yours, George Moore'.) -- purchased from James F. Drake, New York, 1 April 1937, $90. [ with ] AUTOGRAPH LETTER, 8°, 9 pages , dated August 16th, signed by George Moore to Miss Gough, his secretary about the publication of Hail and Farewell . 'I saw Heinemann and he is anxious to publish " Hail and Farewell " but he says he must see the manuscript - well, of course he must. If he were to find anything libellous in it he would love to stop the printing.' Moore explains the origins of the titles for his autobiographical trilogy. 'Heinemann asked for titles for the different volumes - Hail will do for the first and Farewell for the third but we could not think of a title for the second vol till Atkinson, who is now Heinemann's reader suggested Salve which means "Here I am" or "Welcome" - the Romans used to put it on the door step, 'Ave' 'Salve' 'Vale' with ' Hail and Farewell ' for general title.' Several passages completely replaced; p. 206 (11 lines on Yeats cancelled, corrections in typescript attached), p.240 (last 9 lines), p.241 and p.242 (15 lines on AE and his wife cancelled and replaced by 3 typed pages), p. 280 (7 lines inserted, corrections in typescipt attached), p.311 (6 lines cancelled and replaced, corrections in manuscript), p.336 (9 lines cancelled and 18 lines in manuscript attached), p.341 (6 lines cancelled, 14 lines in manuscript attached). and the FIRST EDITIONS of Ave , London: Heinemann, 1911, Salve , London: Heinemann, 1912 and Vale , London: Heinemann, 1914, uniformly bound in their original blue cloth.
