Beschreibung:

Cabinet card portrait of Chief Jack Red Cloud, as identified in the negative, standing with his pipe and ceremonial dress, with George Spencer's Fort Sheridan imprint on mount recto. Chief Red Cloud (1822-1909) was one of the most important Lakota leaders of the 19th century. As an activist and warrior, he confronted the United States on the battlefield and in the court room. He orchestrated the most successful war against the United States ever fought by an Indian nation, which ended with the signing of the Ft. Laramie Treaty and lobbied in Washington for the needs and autonomy of his people. His eloquence and diplomacy impressed many, but did not produce the results he wanted. He died in 1909 on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Provenance: John Painter Collection of American Indian & Western Photography Condition: Excellent, some light soiling on the image.
