After John Trumbull (American, 1756-1843). Oil on poplar panel, housed in a gilt frame. A portrait of George Washington, standing, in the battlefield of Trenton, unsigned; 35.5 x 24.75 in. (sight). This portrait is registered with the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Provenance: Descended in the family of Abraham Bradley, Jr. (1767-1838), who acquired the painting around 1800, to the present owner. Bradley served as Assistant Postmaster General from 1799 until 1829, in the early history of the United States Post Office Department. During his years as clerk to the Postmaster General (from 1793 until 1799), Bradley started creating postal service maps identifying routes between stations, and thus established a reputation as a cartographer. He was eventually appointed Assistant Postmaster General in 1799 and continued updating and creating maps as the frontier moved west. Condition: In-painting. Recent restoration entailing the filling of vertical paint cracks and touch-ups to the gilt frame.
