Beschreibung:

Quadratkarte Nord Atlantischer Ozean. Nr 1870 G. Kartengruppe, Kriegsmarinewerft, Kiel: Dated 1938, with manuscript note 11/41. A 3-color lithographed German chart of the North Atlantic, official stamps on the verso, the chart with a red line delineating the North Atlantic zone for U-Boat cover, the chart with a green overprint grid sectorizing the sea areas into coordinated squares (ie ES35 or DE95), pencil annotations showing the track of an unknown U-Boat from a resting area south of the Faroes around the West of Ireland to the approaches of the English Channel. Various areas are shaded in, particularly a zone A, a heavily defended area, west of Northern Ireland near Lough Foyle, the location of a US Naval station, and many airfields around that area supporting the convoys from the USA. Some light stains and wear along old fold lines. 545 x 685 mm. (21.5 x 27 inches.) A rare German chart of the North Atlantic, printed in 1938, used by a U-Boat commander, probably in 1941, to plot the track of his U-boat around Ireland and into the Channel approaches. U-Boat material is very rare since 80% of all U-boats had been sunk by the end of 1945. I suspect that this chart was submitted as part of an official report to HQ, hence its survival.
