GHEYN, Jacob de. Waabenhandling om Ror musketter, oc Spedser . [The Hague: 1608]. 3 parts in one volume, 2 (369 x 268mm). Hand-coloured engraved title, letterpress dedication leaf and one-leaf address to the reader, 33 leaves of instruction in Dutch, German, Danish, French and English, and 117 hand-coloured engraved plates, heightened in gold and silver, with red borders. (Title soiled at margins, some soiling and staining of plates, mainly at margins, soiling affecting the engraved area of a few plates, particularly plate 25 in part II and plates 15 and 19 in part III, plate 15 in part II with a small pencil mark on the pikeman's face, slight spotting to plate I in part II and plate 1 in part III, plate 21 in part I and plate 4 in part II with neatly repaired, marginal tears, several plates with short tear at bottom margin, 5 plates extended at bottom margin, some plates re-hinged, the last 10 plates with stain at outer margin.) Near-contemporary French calf with armorial stamped in gilt on both covers, gilt panelled spine, red edges (extremities rubbed, joints cracked, a few scuff marks, spine a little damaged at head and foot). Provenance : Sir William Augustus Fraser of Ledeclune and Morar (armorial bookplate); Henry Yates Thompson (book label, recording his purchase of the book at Sotheby's, February 1902); Ambrose Morell (gift inscription from Thompson, reading 'For the library of the Tuxedo Armoury souvenir of a visit. March 1907'). An important copy of a celebrated work. According to Cockle, the first edition appeared in English in 1607 with the title The exercise of Armes for Calivres, Musketts, and Pikes . However, Lipperheide also records an edition of 1607 in German. While continuing to be printed in Holland, the work was issued simultaneously in various languages in 1608, but this issue with Dutch title and text in five languages is very unusual. The elaborate plates -- 42 on the calivre or arquebuss, 43 on the musket, and 32 on the pike -- provide intricate details of costume and equipment, besides demonstrating the actual use of the arms themselves. Graesse III, p. 77; cf. Cockle 79 and Lipperheide Qb 18-19.
