GHEYN, Jakob de (1565-1629). Waffenhandlung von den Rören, Musquetten, undt Spiessen. The Hague: [no publisher], "1607" [amended in manuscript to 1608]. 3 parts in one volume, 2 o (358 x 272 mm). Engraved title and 117 plates after de Gheyn, part II, plate one lettered in manuscript "IDGheÿn. in," 8 additional plates by Goltzius and two others bound in at end, woodcut initials. (Title somewhat stained and with some chipping and fraying at edges, lower corners of first ten leaves worn, some occasional pale marginal staining.) Contemporary vellum gilt, central gilt supralibro of Peter Wok, edges red, (front hinge cracked, fore- and lower-edge of front cover damaged and with losses); red half morocco folding case. Provenance : Petr Vok z Rozmberka, (Peter Wok of Rosenberg) (1539-1611) a Czech nobleman of the House of Rosenberg (his supralibros, dated 1608); acquired from Colnaghi, 1980. FIRST EDITION, German language issue, The present work was commissioned in the late 1590s by John II of Nassau, as part of his cousin Prince Maurice's reforms of the army of the States-General at that period, which eventually led to success in the war against the Spanish and independence. After a 10 or 12 year period of peace, it was felt that the publication of the work would not be detrimental to the Dutch army, and it was issued in the present edition, which was rapidly recognised as a leading treatise on the subject, and followed by numerous reprints. The engraved plates after Goltzius are reduced copies of ths Roman Heroes (see Hollstein VIII, 161-170). VERY FINE PROVENANCE: Peter Wok of Rosenberg formed with his brother one of the largest libraries of his time. Most of the volumes are in Libraries in Prague and since the Thirty Year War in the Royal Library in Stockholm. The New Hollstein De Gheyn II, Jacques de Gheyn II, 340-457; see Cockle 79 (English language 1607 issue); see Lipperheide Qb18 (Dutch language 1607 issue); Collijn, Det Rosenbergska biblioteket och dess ex Libris Stockholm, 1907, fig. 14.
