GILLES ROBERT DE VAUGONDY (1688-1766) AND DIDIER ROBERT DE VAUGONDY (1723-1786) Atlas Universel . Paris: pour les auteurs et chez Boudet, 1757-[1758]. Large 2° (sheet size 560 x 804mm). Engraved allegorical title by Baquoy after J. Oger, and woodcut figure of Atlas. 103 double-page engraved maps hand-coloured in outline, as listed in contents on R1v, plus 5 route of Italy, Spain, Germany England and France, map versos with stencilled titles and occasional manuscript numbers. (Map 1 [Orbis vetus] with corner torn, map 2 repaired at lower margin, 48 [Pays Bas Catholiques] with tear along fold and a second 85mm. tear into engraved area, light browning to maps 64, 71, and 85, maps 70, 79 and a few others creased near fold, 103 slightly stained.) Contemporary French marbled calf, spine gilt with red morocco label, red edges (rubbed, spine worn at head and foot). Provenance : Bibliothèque d’Hauteville (label and bookplate). EARLY EDITION, LARGE-PAPER COPY , of this important atlas by Robert de Vaugondy père et fils. This edition contains the 103 maps listed on R1v, 12 of the ancient and 91 of the modern world. The first instalment of 30 maps had appeared in 1752, but the present edition was the first to appear with a title-page. In addition to the listed maps, there are five ‘cartes des postes’ or road maps made available to subscribers at the extra cost of ‘six livres en grand Papier’ and ‘cinq en petit’. It was undoubtedly a book for the great library. Bound in half calf, the complete work sold for 150 livres in large and 126 livres in small paper.
