GILLISS, James Melville, Lieut. (1811–1864). The U.S. Naval Astronomical Expedition to the Southern Hemisphere, During the Years 1849–50–51–52. Washington: A.O.P. Nicholson, 1855. 2 volumes (of 4) only, 4to. 47 lithograph plates (several tinted or hand–colored), one large hand–colored folding panoramic plate, 4 folding maps, numerous wood–engravings illustrations in text (frontispiece dampstained at upper corner, scattered foxing or brown to several plates, some offsetting to text from plates). Contemporary half olive brown calf, marbled boards, raised bands, black leather lettering–piece gilt (extremes gently rubbed, some dampstaining to upper margins in Volume I). Provenance: John and Joy Miller (rubberstamp). FIRST EDITION. Includes the first two volumes of the report of the U.S. expedition to Chile and Argentina. This was the third official U.S. exploring expedition after Wilkes and Lynch. Hill 707; Sabin 27419.
