Gilpin (William)] An Essay on Prints, containing Remarks upon the Principles of Picturesque Beauty..., first edition , contemporary ink inscription "N.Drake 1768" at head of title, title and final leaf browned at edges, modern half calf, morocco label, J.Robson, 1768; Three Essays: on Picturesque Beauty; on Picturesque Travel; and on Sketching Landscape: to which is added a poem, on Landscape Painting, second edition, half-title, 7 aquatint plates, 6 hand-coloured or tinted, trimmed, errata leaf at end, contemporary ink inscription to half-title, foxed, contemporary tree calf, rubbed, rebacked with gilt spine and red morocco label, 1794, 8vo (2) ⁂ In the first Gilpin introduced the concept of the picturesque identifying it as "that kind of beauty which is agreeable in a picture", an idea which became popular in the late 18th century and one which he developed in many of his later works.
