This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued in Rome on 30th May 2019 by professor Daniela Fonti, who dates the drawing to 1946-47 and identifies the dedicatory as a journalist friend of the artist. Nel 1949, ormai anziano, Gino Severini conduce una nuova personalissima rimeditazione sugli anni del futurismo giovanile. La sua arte convoglia così in una moderna rivisitazione dei ritmi scattanti degli anni Dieci, giungendo nuovamente a dissolvere la visione degli oggetti sotto la spinta dinamica di linee e forme. Il soggetto di quest’opera grafica, tra i più ricorrenti nella pittura coeva di Severini, è una natura morta dal sapore spiccatamente francese, elaborata mediante un segno ritmico veloce, danzante, capace di riproporre con successo, con pochissimi tratti di china, quegli stessi valori cromatici accuratamente modulati, invece, nei corrispondenti esemplari a olio. Questo genere di soggetti, negli anni Quaranta, permette a Severini di esprimersi in totale libertà creativa e di servirsi di reminiscenze del suo periodo futurista, ma anche di elementi neocubisti, propri delle sue nature morte degli anni Quaranta. L’impianto, la scelta e la disposizione dei suddetti elementi avvicinano molto la nostra composizione a Natura morta con strumenti musicali del 1944-1945 (collezione privata, in D. Fonti, Gino Severini Catalogo ragionato , Milano 1988, p. 613, n. D20). In 1949, already an old man, Gino Severini embarked on a new and highly personal “remeditation” on the years of the Futurism of his youth; he thus channelled his art into a modern revisitation of the snappy rhythms of the 1910s and, propelled by the dynamic thrust of lines and forms, again dissolved his vision of objects. The subject of this graphic work, one of the most frequently recurring in Severini’s coeval painting, is a still life with a decidedly French aura, composed with a quick, dancing, rhythmic sign capable of successfully proposing, with just a few black inked lines, those same colour values that are instead accurately modulated in the corresponding versions in oils. In the 1940s, this type of subject permitted Severini to express himself in complete creative freedom and to make use of his reminiscences of his Futurist period but also of neo-Cubist elements, especially in his still lifes. The layout and choice and arrangement of the these elements greatly liken our composition to Natura morta con strumenti musicali ( Still Life with Musical Instruments ) from 1944-1945 (private collection, in D. Fonti, Gino Severini Catalogo ragionato. Milano 1988, p. 613, no. D20).
