Giuseppe De Nittis (Barletta 1846 - Saint-Germain-en-Laye 1884) UOMO CON CAPPELLO E PIPA 1871 circa firmato in basso a sinistra olio su tavola cm 22,1x13,4 MAN WITH A HAT AND A PIPE circa 1871 signed lower left oil on panel 8 11/16 by 5 ¼ in Provenienza Milano, collezione Raggi Bibliografia Raccolta Raggi, catalogo della vendita (Galleria Saga, Milano, 3-7 marzo 1941), Milano 1941, p. 20, n. 176. E. Piceni, M. Pittaluga, De Nittis , Milano 1963, tav. 476. De Nittis spent long periods in Naples and its surroundings in the early 1870s. He had left the area after having studied at Gabriele Smargiassi’s landscape school – that he entered when he was fifteen – and plein air painting near Resina (hence the name of the school De Nittis founded with his friends and colleagues, Federico Rossano Marco De Gregorio, and Adriano Cecioni . In 1867, after spending time in Florence, he moved to Paris where, to meet the demands of the French market, he painted figures in eighteenth-century costume. And yet, he maintained a lively interest in the simpler world of Naples, and the people he met along the narrow streets or during his excursions to the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. It was a world that he often captured in small paintings, like this one, a portrait of a man wearing a hat and smoking a pipe. The dark eyes focused on the viewer, the serious expression, and long, narrow nose are rendered almost in monochrome blending with the unpainted lower part of the panel. The sitter, facing front recalls one of the two travelers in his famous painting, Strada da Napoli a Brindisi (Indianapolis, Museum of Art) that had been shown at the Paris Salon in 1872.
