London: R. H. Porter, February 1889-August 1902. [ Bound with :] MAUDSLAY, Alfred P. A Note on the Position and Extent of the great tempel Enclosure of Tenochititlan and the position, structure and orientation of teocalli of Huitzilopochtli . London: Taylor & Francis, 1912. 18 volumes total, 2 text volumes, 4 o (309 x 244 mm), and 16 atlas volumes, oblong 2 o (323 x 496 mm). Text volumes comprise volumes I-IV and the appendix, with Maudslay's Note bound in. 404 views, maps, plans and details of archaeological remains and artifacts (including the alternative plate 49 in volume I), mostly autotypes after Maudsley or H.N.Sweet, and lithographs, a few hand-colored, others colored or tinted, several folding or double-page, and 3 title pages in 16 original parts (numbers 1-7 and 9-17). (Some small marginal marks in red, some spotting, most folding plates separated at fold and repaired on verso with tape, Volume I plagte 21 torn at corner not affecting image and repaired on verso with tape, Volume I plates 69-73 with small marginal tears with loss not affecting image.)Text volumes in modern cloth (some rubbing); plates in original boards (rebound, some rubbing). Provenance: George G. Vaillant (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of this gentleman adventurer's record of the Mayan ruins. Although the principal part of Godman and Salvin's work is given over to fauna and flora, Godman felt that Maudsley's excavations and his photographs "made a valuable addition to our knowledge of the country." The complete work was issued over a long span of time starting in 1879 and runs of this quantity of the series are very scarce on the market. The natural-history section of the work appeared in 240 parts (25 of Botany and 215 of Zoology), spanning 36 years, and each separate study was edited by a leading natural scientist of the day. It was possible to subscribe either to the botanical or the zoological section, which were issued concurrently, with the editors aiming to publish six parts of each every year. The full extent of the work was unknown at the time publication began: according to the prospectus it was erroneously believed that the total "will not much exceed 60 parts . . . of Zoology, and 20 parts of Botany". The 17 parts of Archaeology were included in consequence of Maudslay's excavations, and his photographs, which, Godman felt "made a valuable addition to our knowledge of the country". Biologia Centrali-Americana: Contributions to the Knowledge of the Fauna and Flora of Mexico and Central AmericaArchaeology .
