Half-titles, errata leaf at end of volume 2. (Cc2.3 stained in volume one, 5S2.3 dust-soiled in volume 2, [a1: half-title] and [a4] misbound between [a2] and [a3] in volume one.) Original cream paper-backed blue paper boards, spines numbered in ink (rubbed, spines chipped with minor loss, one or two pale stains); folding cloth case by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Provenance : H. Bradley Martin (bookplate; his sale, Sotheby's New York, Part 9, 14 June 1990, lot 3468). "ONE OF THE EARLIEST, THE CLEAREST, AND MOST ABSOLUTE THEORETICAL EXPOSITIONS OF SOCIALIST AND ANARCHIST DOCTRINE" ( PMM ) FIRST EDITION. The Enquiry was "Godwin's passionate advocacy of individualism, his trust in the fundamental goodness of man, and his opposition to all restrictions on liberty" ( PMM 243); Rothschild 1016.
