Provenance : David Duncan (signature in vol. II at 3C2) -- Bradford Public Libraries (stamp on verso of titles and a few margins). FIRST EDITION. 'One of the earliest, the clearest, and most absolute theoretical expositions of socialist and anarchist doctrine', admired for 'Godwin's passionate advocacy of individualism, his trust in the fundamental goodness of man, and his opposition to all restrictions on liberty' (PMM). Despite the relative obscurity into which Godwin later fell, his book was the philosophical touchstone to anyone dreaming of the renovation of society in the 1790s. Godwin reached the radical conclusion that even his preferred form of government, representative democracy, was a form of tyranny, an 'usurpation upon the private judgement and individual conscience of mankind'. Lowndes 905; PMM 243; Rothschild 1016.
