Leipzig: Georg Joachim Göschen, 1787-90. 8 volumes, 8 o (162 x 97 mm). 8 engraved frontispieces, 8 engraved title vignettes, 3 engraved plates, engraved head- and tail-piece in volumes III. (Scattered light foxing to some volumes.) Contemporary German half calf and marbled boards, spines gilt, each with leather spine label (light rubbing to some edges). Provenance : von Plato (ownership inscription in volume I); Thea and Carl Sternheim (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of the authorized collected works, including the first appearance of Faust . For the separate issue of the first edition of Faust , see lot 156. A varying number of etched plates by David Chodowiecki was sometimes inserted in this edition; this set has three: in volumes I, II and IV. Hagen 11; Wilpert/Gühring 36. (8)
