Vol. 1.] Moscow: at the University Press, 1842. 8° (230 x 150mm). (Mostly marginal dampstains reaching into the text of some gatherings, some light spotting and light soiling.) Contemporary Russian green half roan (spine foot chipped, spine-head compartment and front board nearly detached, extremities rubbed, corners worn). FIRST EDITION OF GOGOL'S BEST KNOWN WORK. 'One of the great novels of nineteenth-century Russia' (Fekula). This first part of Gogol's famous satire was printed in an edition of 2400 copies with money borrowed from Pogodin. A second part was published by his heirs in 1855 from draft notes found after the author's death. Fekula 4716; Kilgour 345; Smirnov-Sokol'ski, Moia biblioteka , 610.
