The compass limb engraved with an LT calculating scale, the compass face with an outkeeper with gold watch hand, divided in both poles and miles. The north marker an eagle sitting upon a globe. Compass signed and dated G:Chandlee W. Wm. Hord. 1808. Lot includes both sight vanes, compass cover, and tripod with ball and socket joint; compass overall lg. 14.25., needle lg. 5 in.  The compass was made for William Hord (1764-1825), born in Louisa County, Virginia. Hord settled in Hawkins County, Tennessee where he served in the 3rd and 4th General Assemblies. He was commissioned a major in the Hawkins County militia.Â
