GORDON, Charles George (General, 1833-1885). Autograph map with notes addressed to Major Wilson RE, Fashelie, 2 November [18]75 , depicting the course of the Nile from Lake Victoria to Lardo, commenting ' 2/3 . . of work finished: Doubt if I shall go on the Sudan, hope that Stanley will do it. My whole desire is to make safe communications to the two Lakes' and briefly describing the route, with a footnote headed 'Mrs. Freese 1 . . Nov . ' on the source of the Nile, 1¾ pages, 8vo ; an autograph note entitled 'Observations on Lower Nile between Asua River and Gondokoro', 4 pages, 8vo (ink faded, tears in folds); and an autograph map of the Nile from Kerri to the South with a note 'Lt. Chippendall has from Rageef ( sic ) to Kerri', [August 1875], one page, 8vo (torn in folds with slight loss). Gordon's notes appear to be extracts from correspondence with Major Wilson and Mrs. Freese, probably sent to his brother Enderby during his first visit to the Sudan to explore the route of the Nile and to end the slave trade. The map of the Nile to the South is very similar to another in the collection of the Royal Geographical Society. (3)
