GORDON, General Charles George (1833-1885). Autograph letter signed to Mr [William Robertson] Smith, Southampton, 25 November 1882, 8 pages, 8vo . A letter on scriptural matters, including the Fall in the Garden of Eden, his own interpretation of the commandments, the Creation, the symbolism of the Tabernacle, and the site of the Garden of Eden. 'At Seychelles is what I think the tree which was used as that of Knowledge & also that used as that of life '. The letter includes a small sketch map showing the area from the Dead Sea to the Seychelles, with a rough outline of the Blue Nile. Gordon's correspondent may be William Smith (1813-1893), editor of dictionaries of the Bible and of Christian antiquities.
