GOSPEL LECTIONARY, in Greek, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [?southern Italy, 12th century] 280 x 235mm. 132 leaves: 1 8, 2 7(of 8, v cancelled), 3-6 8, 7 2, 8 6, 9-16 8, 17 7(of 8, lacking i) 18 6(of 8, lacking i and final cancelled blank), quire signatures centre lower margin of most final versos and showing gathering 17 should follow 7, two columns of 25-28 lines written in dark brown ink in Greek minuscule written on 25-28 scored horizontals and between two outer paired and two inner single verticals, an additional vertical in outer margins, justification: approximately 200 x 170mm, prickings for ruling survive throughout, ecphonetic accents, rubrics and titles in red, FOUR ILLUMINATED INTERLACE HEADPIECES and more than TWO HUNDRED ILLUMINATED INITIALS AND TAILPIECES (dampstaining to first ten and final six folios, small corrosion holes in first and final leaves and the inner upper corners of around ten others, occasional spots, stains and drops of wax, rodent damage to lower margins of around twenty folios, a few wormholes in outer leaves, script strengthened on opening folio). MEDIEVAL BINDING, of brown leather over wooden boards, stamped in blind with individual tools including palmette, sprouting volutes, and a diapered rectangular strip, marks and pins from applied metalwork cross on upper cover and bud-shaped cornerpieces and bosses on lower, lower cover with pins from clasp straps, remains of pins in fore-edge of upper board (rebacked, leather at fore-edge of lower cover restored, slight worming, small losses at corners). Brown morocco-backed box. PROVENANCE: The style of decoration would point to a possible origin for this manuscript in southern Italy. CONTENT: Gospel Lectionary with the daily Gospel lessons for Easter night to Pentecost Sunday (Period of St John) ff.1-30 col.1; for Monday after Pentecost to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Period of St Matthew) ff.30 col.1-46 col.2; for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross to the Great Fast (Period of St Luke) ff.46v col.1-55v, 120-126v (gathering 17 bound out of order), 56-57v col.2; for the Great Fast, the Triodion of Lent (Period of St Mark) ff.57v col.2-94; Menologion, or Gospels for the fixed feasts, beginning in September ff.94-119v, 127-132 This is a previously unrecorded Gospel Lectionary. The Institut für Neutestamentliche Textforschung in Münster have been notified and have listed it as Aland l 2414.
