GOSPEL LECTIONARY. Single leaf from a LARGE ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT LECTIONARY ON VELLUM [Southern Germany, Augsburg?, circa 1450] 384x254mm, written in light-brown ink in a gothic textura, rubrics in red, double column, 34 lines, justification 250x177mm. 2 large six-line initials "I", blue on burnished gold ground with white penwork decoration, one containing a cat and a bird; with gold baguette extensions the length of the page and coloured floral garlands at head and foot. On verso, one large initial "I" pink on gold ground, inhabited by two blue rabbits, with full-length gold baguette extension ending in strapwork decoration and coloured floral border at head and foot. The leaf is part of the Gospel of St.Matthew: chapter 1:40. This sumptuous decorative leaf is closely related to 4 leaves from a lectionary sold in our rooms 23 June 1993, lots 8-11, though not from the same manuscript. An even more sumptuous leaf related in style is described in the Breslauer Exhibition Catalogue no.44 and there attributed to the Augsburg illuminator Conrad Wagner
