GOULD, John (1804-1881) and Richard Bowdler SHARPE (1847-1909). A Monograph of the Trochilidae or Family of Humming-Birds ... completed after the author's death by R. Bowdler Sharpe. Supplement . London: Taylor and Francis for Henry Sotheran & Co., [1880]-1887. Supplement volume only, broadsheets (548 x 370mm). 58 lithographic plates by and after Gould and W. Hart coloured and heightened with gum arabic by a later hand, printed by Walter and Mintern Brothers. A remboîtage into a contemporary gilt dark-green crushed morocco binding, boards with broad borders of gilt foliate and floral rolls, gilt roll-tooled board-edges and turn-ins, spine gilt in compartments, 3 with modern morocco lettering-pieces, bookplate of Viscount Henry Lascelles [1882-1947] on upper pastedown, gilt edges (a few slight scuff-marks). FIRST EDITION OF THE SUPPLEMENT . Gould's A Monograph of the Trochilidae was published in 25 parts (forming five volumes) between 1849 and 1861, and the five parts of the Supplement were issued between 1880 and 1887, forming the sixth volume. Gould died on 3 February 1881, having prepared the second part of the Supplement for publication, and the remaining parts were completed by Richard Bowdler Sharpe (text, with the assistance of Osbert Salvin; Sharpe's contributions are signed 'R.B.S.') and William Hart (plates), and published by Henry Sotheran and Co., who had purchased the publication rights to Gould's works, together with other items from the estate. The Supplement illustrated 60 new species on 58 plates, equal in beauty and magnificence to the 360 plates of the original work. Anker 182; Fine Birds Books p. 102; Nissen IVB 380; Sauer 29; Wood p. 365 (erroneously calling for 57 plates); Zimmer pp. 263-264.
