GOULD (John): A CENTURY OF BIRDS FROM THE HIMALAYA MOUNTAINS, London [Gould], [1831-] 1832 [-1833] FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, folio (525 x 345mm.), 2pp. list of subscribers, 80 fine hand-coloured lithographed plates with the backgrounds uncoloured, by and after Elizabeth Gould (from sketches by Gould), full olive morocco, sides panelled in gilt with floral cornerpieces, spine gilt in 7 compartments, inner gilt dentelles, g.e., by Riviere A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST OF GOULD'S FAMOUS FOLIOS which in two respects differs from his later monographs. The backgrounds of the plates are uncoloured (like Lear's Parrots , to which it is much indebted) and the text is largely the work of Nicholas A. Vigors. None of the subsequent texts were written by anyone other than Gould himself. Although Mrs. Gould's 80 plates depict 102 figures, two of these are of young males of species already represented elsewhere, so in fact she is faithful to the title A Century of Birds
