GOULD, JOHN A Monograph of the Ramphastidae, or Family of Toucans. London: the author, 1834 — Supplement to the First Edition of the Ramphastida. London: the author, 1855 Folio (20 3/8 x 14 1/2 in.; 518 x 368 mm). 33 fine hand-colored lithographed plates after and by John Gould, Elizabeth Gould and Edward Lear one uncolored lithographed anatomical plate after and by G. Scharf, list of subscribers; a few stray spots, minor offsetting of plates onto text leaves. Modern green morocco by Kurt Gaebel, spine and covers ornately gilt, edges gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled endleaves; extremities rubbed, corners just bumped. First edition. Gould's first monograph of a bird family and one of his "most lovely works," with the supplement (Fine Bird Books). At the time of Gould's expanded second edition of this monograph (1852—54), the supplement of the new plates was issued to complement the first edition.
