GOULD (John): A MONOGRAPH OF THE TROCHILIDAE OR FAMILY OF HUMMING-BIRDS, London, by the author [1849-] 1861 (vols. I-V), Henry Sotheran, 1887 (supplement) FIRST EDITION, 6 vols. including supplement, large folio (547 x 367mm.) 418 fine hand-coloured lithographed plates by and after Gould, H.C. Richter and W. Hart many highlighted with gold overpained with transparent oil colours and varnish, list of subscribers, lists of plates, full contemporary green morocco, richly gilt, spines gilt in 7 compartments, g.e. VERY FINE COMPLETE COPY OF GOULD'S MASTERPIECE. The supplement, originally published in 5 parts, was finished by R. Bowdler Sharpe and Osbert Salvin after Gould's death in 1881, when only one of the parts had been issued, though Gould had already overseen the preparation of most of the plates. Most of the subjects came from Gould's own collection of Humming-Bird specimens, a number of which he exhibited at the Regent's Park Zoological Gardens during the Great Exhibition of 1851. The exhibition was a great success and gave Gould a chance to display his new technique of accentuating the irridescence of the birds' plumage by use of brilliant metallic colouring. Nissen IVB 380; Zimmer pp.263-264; Fine Bird Books p. 78 (***) (6)
