GOULD, John. The Birds of Great Britain . London: printed by Taylor and Francis, published by the author, [1862-1873] 5 volumes, 2° (550 x 370mm.), 5pp. list of subscribers, 367 hand-coloured plates from drawings by Gould, J. Wolf, H. C. Richter and W. Hart mostly lithographed by Richter and Hart, printed by Walter (a few, approx. 12, plates lightly spotted), full olive morocco, gilt panelled sides with cornerpieces, spines gilt in 7 compartments, g.e., by Roger de Coverly FIRST EDITION. A fine copy of "the most sumptuous and costly of the British bird books" (Mullens & Swann). Gould was especially proud of this work, it was the most complete representation of the birds of his native land to date and, as a "novelty", he included many drawings with illustrations of young birds.
