GRANT, ULYSSES S. 1822-1885. Report of Lieut. General U.S. Grant of the Armies of the United States. 1864-1865. Washington: 1865. 8vo (192 x 127 mm). Front cover only, on blue paper, lacking text, tear from top edge with tape repair causing a stain through the paper, a few stains and fingermarks. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY GRANT with autograph dedication to "Wm E. Dodge, Esq., New York, N.Y." and title of "Lt. Gen." below the signature, now with the cover only. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the U.S. Army's highest rank was Lieutenant General, but only George Washington had ever held the rank, until Lincoln promoted Grant to Lt. General in 1864. In 1865, Grant was promoted again to a newly created rank, dating the presentation here to early 1865.
