GRAUNT, John Natural and political observations [...] made upon the bills of mortality [...] with reference to the government, religion, trade, growth, &c, of the city of London [2nd ed.]. London, Th. Roycroft for J. Martin [etc.], 4to: [16]-79-[pp. + 2 fold. tables (paper age-toned, title soiled, tickets removed from title). Later vellumcovered boards filled up with blank paper, flat spine titled in ink, marbled endpapers. Good copy. Pioneer work (printed same year as 1st ed.) by J. Graunt (1620-1674), British haberdasher, and one of the 1st demographers and statisticians. It contains particulars of burials and christenings, and totals of plague deaths in the time of Shakespeare. The work has also been attributed to Sir William Petty (1623-1687). Ref.
