GREEK APULIAN FIGURAL PELIKE 4th century BC A large ceramic vessel with two open handles vertical on their lateral aspects and even at the side with the edge of the belly; narrow neck, flanged mouth, and spherical belly; the body decorated at the neck with a band of rosettes; beneath a woman in loose flowing robes holding a fan in her right hand preceding a nude male with diadem and mirror; to the other side a band of olive leaves on the neck, two youths wrapped in cloaks beneath, one holding a staff and both facing each other; below both scenes is a band of meandering squares. 1.7 kg, 33cm (13"). Very fine condition. Provenance Property of an American gentleman; acquired on the London art market in the 1990s.
