He was the last to rule over both the eastern and the western zones of the Roman Empire. He orchestrated an abortive war against the Goths who established a kingdom south of the Danube within the empire's borders. He also fought two futile civil wars, in which the defeat of the usurpers Magnus Maximus and Eugenius was won at great cost to the Empire. During his reign, orthodox Nicene Christianity became the official religion of the Empire.
