Beschreibung:

GREEK HELLENISTIC CUP 4th-1st century BC A silver cup with deep bowl and rounded base with band of incised lines, raised band to the rim. 233 grams, 13cm (5"). Fine condition. Provenance From an important London collection; ex Rabi Gallery, Mount Street, Mayfair, London, UK, 1980s. Literature For a Hellenistic glass bowl of similar shape see The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 81.10.243. Footnotes The shape is similar to glass bowls from the Hellenistic kingdom of Seleucia, founded by Seleucus I Nicator in 312 BC following the division of the Macedonian empire created by Alexander the Great. At the height of its power, it included central Anatolia, Persia, the Levant, Mesopotamia, and what is now Kuwait, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and north west parts of India. The Seleucid Empire was a major centre of Hellenistic culture that maintained the pre-eminence of Greek customs and where a Greek political elite dominated, mostly in the urban areas.
