Footnotes The shape is similar to glass bowls from the Hellenistic kingdom of Seleucia, founded by Seleucus I Nicator in 312 BC following the division of the Macedonian empire created by Alexander the Great. At the height of its power, it included central Anatolia, Persia, the Levant, Mesopotamia, and what is now Kuwait, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and north west parts of India. The Seleucid Empire was a major centre of Hellenistic culture that maintained the pre-eminence of Greek customs and where a Greek political elite dominated, mostly in the urban areas.
