GREGORY IX, Pope. Decreti huius plenissimum argumentum... Decretum aureum domini Gratiani: cum suo apparatu . Paris: Thielmann Kerver, Jean Petit and Johannes Cabiller, 8 February 1508. 4 o (225 x 168 mm). Printed in red and black, text in two columns, bordered by narrower columns of commentary. Title in red and black with large criblé device of Thielmann Kerver, large woodcut of popes and cardinals on verso, full-page woodcut of a tree of consanguinity (on TT5v), full-page woodcut diagram of family relationships (on TT6), woodcut criblé initials throughout, many initials in red. (Title slightly loose, light marginal staining, mainly to the first few quires, one or two small wormholes, generally not affecting text.) Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards (front joint cracked, head of spine chipped, lacking clasps, lightly soiled). Provenance : Jacobus Gueber of Ottenpurcheim (inscription); unidentified signature on title; Carthusian library at Buxheim (signature and stamp on title); L.H.P. Klotz (Christie's London, 2 November 1994, lot 202). Pope Gregory IX's decretals, a code of canon law based both on conciliar decisions and papal letters, which he promulgated in 1234. He had ordered the canonist St. Raymond of Peñafort to compile them. Adams G-1207, 1211. [ With :] Sententiae sive loci communes utriusque iuris, serie alphabetica digesti, quibus utrunque ius mira quadam brevitate comprehenditur, munc denuo in lecem editi. Cologne: Johann Birckmann and Theodor Baum, 1567. 8 o (143 x 88 mm). (Last leaf used as past down.) Contemporary sheep backed sprinkled boards (worn). Provenance : early effaced signatures on title.
