GREGYNOG PRESS JOHN, LORD OF JOINVILLE. The history of Saint Louis. Newtown: Gregynog Press, 1937. One of 200 copies, of which this is one of 17 specially bound, this copy number 7. Full blue levant morocco, both covers with a diapered design created from intersecting diagonal rules, with a gilt fleur-de-lys at the center of each; signed on the bottom rear turn-in by the Gregynog Press Bindery (by George Fisher though not in the case of the title with his stamp). 13 3/8 inches (29 cm); binding 13 5/8 x 9 5/8 inches (35 x 24 cm), top edge gilt. 3 ff. including title, 157 pp., 4 ff. of maps and genealogical charts, colophon leaf. Numerous hand-colored armorial shields at the foot of many pages, elaborate versal initials in red and blue throughout. In the original drop-back Gregynog case, worn. The initials were designed by the calligrapher Alfred Fairbanks. Harrop 37; Zilverdistel 37. Provenance: with the bookplate of J.R. Abbey. From the Lawrence H. Thielman Collection
