The Prose Writers of America…new edition revised and enlarged.
Philadelphia: Porter and Coates, (c.1870). 8vo (250 x 172 mm). Frontispiece. Original deluxe presentation binding of alligator skin, black morocco label. Condition: a bit rubbed but sound. This most unusual copy of Griswold's famous American prose anthology is in its original deluxe binding of tan alligator skin, stamped on the upper cover with the circular emblem reading “Prose Writers of America” that was used for copies bound in cloth. Laid in at the appropriate points are autographs of many of the authors featured in the anthology, writers as diverse as Beecher, Bryant, Holmes, Dana, Greeley, Everett, and 20 more. The documents bearing their inscriptions range from simple signed cards to correspondence, often of a personal and enlightening nature.
