FIRST EDITION of Hugo de Groot's two poems in Latin composed after his escape from prison. Also included are Dutch translations of the poems, as well as a final celebratory poem written by Reinier Telle. [ With :] Sententie uyt-ghesproocken ende ghepronuncieert over Hugo de Groot, ghewesen Pensionaris der Stadt Rotterdam: den achtienden May, Anno sesthien hondert neghenthien, stilo novo . The Hague: Hillebrandt Jacobssz, 1619. 4 o (182 x 142 mm). 9 leaves. Engraved ornament incorporating a rampant lion within ornamental border on title-page. Near-contemporary marbled boards. FIRST EDITION. Provenance : Menno Hertzberger (bookplate). In the early 17th century, Grotius (1583-1645), one of Holland's leading jurists, became increasingly involved in politics. Religious dispute between the province of Holland and the orthodox Calvinist majority of the state senate created political rifts, and in 1618 Prince Maurice ordered the arrest of the leaders of the opposition, including Grotius and the statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. The latter was executed for high treason; Grotius was sentenced to life imprisonment and incarcerated in the castle of Loevestein. He made a celebrated escape from prison on March 22, 1621 inside a chest of books. The Latijnsche aen-spraeck is a verse celebration of his freedom; the second work records the legal decision surrounding his incarceration. (2)
