Group of Three Miners Standing in Front of Abe Lincoln Mine, Cripple Creek, Colorado Author: Skolas, Julia Place: Cripple Creek, CO Publisher: Julia Skolas Date: Ca. 1908 Description: Cream colored card mount 8x10". Photograph 5⅛x7". Three miners (1 woman and 2 men) with dinner pails in the center, with three miners off to the left hand side. Mine and photographer's names in negative. Photograph appears to be dated (in reverse) in lower left hand corner. The Abe Lincoln Mine, established in 1895, is near Cripple Creek, Colorado. Historically the site has been associated with the Cripple Creek Mining District which is now part of the Pike National Forest. Julia Skolas was born in Wisconsin in May 1863 of Norwegian parents and spent her early years living on a farm in Wisconsin. By the late 1890s, Julia had made her way west and had set up shop as a photographer in Colorado Springs. In 1907, she moved her business to Cripple Creek and established a new photography studio on bustling Bennett Avenue. She photographed gold mines and underground in gold mines during a time in which mostly men were photographers and women were considered bad luck underground. In late 1924, she moved to Denver where she continued her photography work. Sometime after 1930, Julia returned to her home state of Wisconsin where she remained until her death on December 31, 1934. Lot Amendments Condition: Handling wear to card mount; image near fine. Lots sold without reserve are sold “as Is” and are not returnable under any circumstances.
