GRUMMAN AF-2S AIRCRAFT MODEL. Hand-made contractor's model in painted wood, c.1945, on wooden stand, 15-3/4 inches long, 20-1/2 inch wingspan. Provenance: Manufactured by a major aerospace model shop. The AF-2S was developed by the U.S. Navy along with AF-2W as a matched pair of hunter/killer anti-submarine aircraft. The carrier-based planes had their maiden flight in 1945 but were not operational until 1950. The AF-2W had a large bubble on the lower fuselage containing search radar, while the AF-2S had a more conventional weapons bay for torpedoes. The plane proved cumbersome to fly and had a high accident rate, and was replaced in 1955 with the S2F Tracker.
