Volume I: contemporary green goatskin gilt, sides with thin gilt roll-tooled border and small foral design in corners, centers stamped with gilt central arms of CZAR PAUL I AND MARIA FEODOROVNA, flat spine in six compartments, gilt-lettered red and brown spine labels, gilt edges (some minor rubbing, light chipping to second spine label); volume II: contemporary red goatskin gilt, sides with gilt with thin gilt roll-tolled border, flatt spine in six compartments, gilt lettered red and brown spine labels, gilt edges (some light staining to upper cover, minor wear to upper spineend and light chipping to spine labels). Provenance : Czar Paul I of Russia (1754-1801) and Czarina Maria Feodorovna (1759-1828, binding of volume one). FIRST EDITION. FROM THE LIBRARY OF CZAR PAUL I AND CZARINA MARIA FEODOROVNA, printed on velin paper. Güldenstädt expedition is the first systematic study of the Caucasus. Güldenstädt travelled through Ukraine and Astrakhan into the northern Caucaus, Karbardino, Ossetia, Chechnya, Dagestan, Igushetia and Georgia between 1770 and 1773. At the end of volume two is a dictionary of various languages of the Caucasus, some recorded for the first time. Pallas edited this travel acount from Güldenstädt's manuscript, due to his untimely death in 1781.
